Led by Patricia, we reflected on the journey to Bethlehem and the words of the carol, while exploring themes of belonging, stewardship, and spiritual renewal.
- The stable as a symbol of welcome:
The stable door was presented as a place of inclusion, open to all—those weary from life’s journey and those curious about faith. It was described as a haven for the rejected, the suffering, and all creation, emphasizing God’s presence and love for everyone. - Human stewardship and responsibility:
It is also a reminder of humanity’s duty to care for God’s creation. Despite humanity’s failure to be good stewards—polluting, warring, and exploiting nature, the stable offers a space for repentance and renewed commitment to peace and sustainability. - Pilgrimage as a life metaphor:
Life was likened to a pilgrim journey, filled with challenges and joys. The meeting encouraged reflection on personal experiences—trials, triumphs, and moments of rest—that shaped one’s spiritual path. - Encountering God in simplicity:
The stable was depicted as a place to let go of worldly burdens and approach God with humility, like the Magi leaving their riches behind. Entering the stable required childlike trust, curiosity, and delight, enabling participants to find joy in God’s presence. - Mary’s role and tears of hope:
Mary’s tears were discussed as a symbol of shared sorrow for the world’s suffering—war, injustice, and loss—but also as a reflection of hope in God’s promise to uplift the lowly and bring justice. Her grief is said to renew courage and faith in divine justice. - Heart’s desire and fulfillment in God:
While humans desire worldly achievements and justice, the ultimate longing is communion with God. True peace and fulfillment are found in surrendering these desires and embracing God’s promise. - Bethlehem as a place of rest and renewal:
Bethlehem is a place of spiritual homecoming where all are welcome, offered hope, and reminded of their role in God’s plan. It is a place to experience God’s peace, provision, and promises.
The meeting concluded with a call to embrace the Advent season, seek justice, and trust in God’s transformative power.
